Considered vital to national morale, Hollywood studios churned out movies with strong patriotic messages to help Americans take their minds off the ever-present war.
Theaters included newsreels with footage of the war. Movie stars helped the war effort by promoting war bond sales and entertaining troops at home and overseas. War Department officials commissioned filmmakers, like Oscar-winning directors William Wyler and John Ford, to document the war on film. Decades later, movies about WWII continue to be made. But recent statistics indicate that only 66,143 of the millions who served are still alive and all are in their 90s or older. We must collect and preserve their stories while we can.
